Session 4a: Leading Successful Change

We are all experiencing tremendous change – in society, in our organizations, and in our personal lives. Change is critical for continued growth and development. Leading others through this change, however, is exceptionally challenging. In fact, a recent study finds that 75% of changes fail to meet their stated objectives. Why is this? In today’s session we will explore why changes fail and identify techniques to successfully lead people through change.

Erik Eddy, Professor of Management and Director of the Institute for Leadership Development at Siena College, led us in discussion on how to lead successful change in our organizations.  We explored the importance of clearly understanding the true issue at hand and not simply reacting to the obvious symptoms. Once we’ve identified the appropriate change to implement, we next explored the importance of assessing individual readiness for change and leading members of our community through the change. Teams spent time in break-out groups discussing their own change and developing a plan of action for successfully leading that change. We hope that the insights gained here will be valuable in helping others through change.
